Are you one of the increasing number of students who regularly miss a meal because you can't afford to eat? Do you think that Youth Allowance and other income support payments should be fair and equitable for all? DUSA is fighting to amend the 30hour per week work force participation test, and make sure a fair system is ready for 2010! Join the fight to get a fair income support system for 2010!

I don't need mountains of cash for nothing. All I need is help to pay my basic bills. $200 a week doesn't come close when my rent is $140. All we need is a system that reflects reality! |

As a Postgraduate student I receive no support from Centrelink whatsoever. Instead I'm forced to work near full time hours to support myself, do my studying and assignments, then try to squeeze in some sleep somewhere. How is this encouraging people to become further qualified? |

I'm living on nothing but debt ! - amazing govt complains about skill shortages but wants individuals to carry the cost - you are always old enough to die for your country but not old enough to be treated like an adult. - sucks |

Although I live at home, I still pay my way. But I am only recieving $40 a fortnight from Centrelink! While traveling to the other side of the city for uni and working, meanwhile doll bludgers get paid well. |

i live 3 hours from home, unable to qualify for austudy, and i am on a full time study load. i have to work to support my self.. a little extra cash would be greatly appreciated. youth allowance needs to be fixed. needs to have a more realistic reflection on the youth of Australia! |

I am a Uni student who is not supported by parents, or by Centrelink. I live away from home and pay for my food rent etc. I will not recieve the Rudd bonus even though I work a few casual on/off jobs for income(whatever I can get). As I live off around 6-7k a year I got all my tax back, thus why I will not be recieving the KRudd bonus. So in a way I am penalised for being independant whilst people earning up to $80k still get some money. I am living fairly well doing what I am doing, it just means you have to be more careful with money. No internet, no home phone. Reduce eating out. It's not too hard, it just takes some motivation, and doing without some things. |

I live away from home 5 days a week, go home to work 1 or 2 days, if I'm lucky, and can't get any living away from home allowances, I'm ineligible for austudy and didn't get any stimulus packages. Uni students deserve a fair go, after all we are the ones bettering oursleves to go into the workforce well trained! |

Firstly some people who've signed this petition should be made aware there are legal ways to get around some of these road blocks and ensure you are given youth allowance/ austudy. DUSA I urge you to look into these loopholes and assist struggling students to take advantage of them and students please go in and ask for some help with your Centrelink payments. Demand to speak with a Centrelink social worker they have to be made available to you. |

The amount you can earn per fortnight should be increased to a reasonable amount before your payments decrease |

I completely agree. I work full time and study part time off campus. My husband is hopefully studying law full time next year, yet we are not eligible for Austudy. My wage isn't high, it is quite modest, yet we provide no support. I believe if someone in Australia wants to better themselves (ie. become a lawyer), to gain a skill for the community, they should be supported. We are not eligible for any type of support from the Government, which was very surprising. |

Last year they said i couldnt receive Youth Allowance due to my Dad's Income.. I started Uni this year and that suddenly changed! How does 273 bucks a fornight cover my rent of 115 a week along with bills, and food.. ive eaten rice alone for 3 meals a day because i cant afford anything else!! Yet i have a friend on 400 a fortnight, who lives on campus at ballarat uni and IS NOT INDEPENDANT! How can he get more than i do, and MORE than the actual rate!! |

Students struggle enough as it is with the current Youth Allowance structure. I can't do certain subjects etc because it would mean I would loose my YA payments, how about a bit of flexibility and understanding! |

I find it really disapointing that students miss out yet again because a few senators cant get a grip on reality! |

Both me and my partner are full time students and we have a 2.5 yr old boy. We still live with my in laws as we cannot afford to move out. Both me and my partner try to work over the vacation but it appears that it far more difficult to find work thats available. We cannot afford to kindergarten for the little one so he is often taken care of by family members. It is difficult trying to raise a family and continnuing studies at the same time as we are often faced with financial difficulties that coime with just that. We often miss out on activities that other children get to do due to rising costs of living. |

We need larger payments! If we can eat better and live a bit better we can get better marks and not have to lose sleep trying to keep up with everything! |

I get Youth Allowance and love it. Make life so much easier to study properly instead of having to stress about working enough just to live. |

The government should be enabling people to further their education and achieve the best results possible. It would be great if students only had to work minimum hours whilst juggling a full-time study load. |

I agree. Income suppliments for independants have been knackered by recent legislation and it needs to be rectified. The legislation changing independant qualification came in halfway through my gap year and well, basically screwed my plans for independance. |
